July 2021

July trail projects:

2 New Trails Open!

Besaw

  • "Besaw" - an area that many Burke Mtn old timers referred to as the “old Besaw Place”. There also used to be a school house on the Victory Rd in the “S” turn just above Flower Brook Rd that was called “ The Besaw School”.
  • This trail is a combination of machine built flow, hand built sections, and pre-existing corridors. One of the final phases of the Moose Haven connector project, this section of the connection further cuts down the transfer time on both Victory and Flower Brook Roads between the Flower Brook Trail and Moose Haven for a true long distance backcountry trail ride!
  • Length: 1.24 miles
  • Difficulty rating: blue square

Dashney Loop

  • "Dashney Loop" references Fred Dashney who is rumored to haunt the old farmhouse!
  • This new beginner loop uses existing ski trail corridors. The majority of the trail is doubletrack, with short sections of singletrack, some playful features and amazing views to the North of Willoughby Gap.
  • To access this section of the network, park at the Dashney Nordic Center Parking lot which is just off the beaten path if you're looking to get away. This parking location is also great for accessing Moose Alley and even a loop out to Moose Haven to check out the other new trail, Besaw!
  • Length: 1.8 miles
  • Difficulty rating: green circle
  • The large amount of drainage and hardening done on this loop will also serve to improve the winter time trail action as this loop is also a Nordic ski trail.

Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance! Over the last month, the crew has hit almost every trail on the network to address problem spots and improve long term sustainability of the  network. They worked to:

  • Clear and widen drainages,
  • Reshape benches and berms,
  • Harden various sections
  • Fill pockets that hold water and sections of trail that have lost material and are ditched out below grade
  • Address trail braiding and widening.
  • Trails that had an original treadway of 18” and are now 6-8’+ wide and have evolved into a trail with multiple ride lines scattered about, especially in areas with trees that have shallow soils that expedite the exposure of roots.

Thank you to the Northwoods Stewardship Center Youth Conservation Crew who spent a week on the network. They installed five switchbacks on the doubletrack climb up to Sky Dive and Farmjunk. This .2 miles section of trail will help lessen erosion and makes for a nice mellow climb.

Sadly, we are down to the final week of a full trail crew before a majority of them head back to school! Hard to believe we are already into August! According to CJ, this has been one of the best crews he's ever had the pleasure of working with, and while many of them were new to trail building they stepped up and knocked it out of the park this summer.

Road construction on East Darling Hill is still well underway and pretty much the entire road has been torn up. Remember to ride the trails as much as possible when heading from town to the top of Darling Hill and use caution while traveling through the construction zone, either on a bike, foot, or motor vehicle.

The next Volunteer Work Day is on Saturday, August 28th from 9am-12pm and as always, is sponsored by Lawson's Finest Liquids! Email info@kingdomtrails.org to be added to the volunteer contact list.

The next Volunteer Work Day is scheduled for Saturday, July 31 and is sponsored by Lawson's Finest Liquids!

For the July Volunteer Work Day we worked on a new trail (to be announced soon) and were grateful for the Providence Youth Cycling Team for spending half of Saturday of their weekend trip donating their time
