Indigenous Peoples Day

Oct 12, 2020

Honoring tradition in Vermont.

In 2019, Governor Phil Scott signed a bill into law proclaiming the second Monday in October would be celebrated in Vermont as Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day.

At Kingdom Trails, we recreate on the land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange among indigenous peoples for thousands of years. KTA recognizes that Vermont was founded and is built upon lands first inhabited by the indigenous people of this region, the Abenaki, and seeks to honor and acknowledge their ancestors and allies, both past and present.

In July, the Governor signed a bill that allows citizens that are members of state-recognized indigenous tribes to qualify for lifetime free hunting and fishing licenses.

For the people of Vermont, hunting and fishing are a way of life and we consider that tradition to be an integral part of the spirit of our state. With support for our community and the safety of our users, the Kingdom Trail network will be closed for the weekend of 10/24-10/25 for VT Youth Hunting Weekend. This time is meant to help young hunters get the quality training and experience they need. We hope the kids participating enjoy the woods and have beautiful weather that weekend!

In the spirit of Indigenous Peoples’ Day today, and every day we celebrate the beauty and bounty of this land with gratitude for the people that have protected its earth, sky and waters.

Thank you to the KT landowners that continue the generous tradition of shared land use.

For our neighbors to the North, we send our very best wishes for a happy Thanksgiving, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Vermont. Bonne Action de Grâce!

Respectfully,
Team KTA
